<![CDATA[ Gamesradar+ ]]> https://www.gamesradar.com Tue, 04 Jun 2024 10:07:22 +0000 en <![CDATA[ Like a Dragon: Yakuza is coming to Prime Video this year and the Kiryu actor has already shown off the iconic back tattoo ]]> Now, that’s rad: The Like a Dragon series is being turned into a six-part TV show on Prime Video.

Based on the hugely popular series of crime drama games developed by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Like a Dragon protagonist Kiryu Kazuma will be brought to life on screen by Kamen Rider Drive’s Ryoma Takeuchi.

Like a Dragon: Yakuza, directed by Masaharu Take, will be released in two batches of three episodes each on October 25 and November 1 (though Amazon’s latest promo suggests those in the west will be getting it on October 24, presumably due to time zones).

The series will draw inspiration from the first game in the series, 2005’s Yakuza, which saw the noble yakuza member Kiryu take the fall for a crime he didn’t commit – spending 10 years in prison for murder.

Like a Dragon: Yakuza will explore the dual timelines of 1995 and 2005 as childhood friends – likely Kiryu and yakuza buddy Nishikiyama – deal with the fallout from an act that entangles them within the criminal underworld of the fictional district of Kamurocho.

The series was teased with Ryoma Takeuchi re-enacting Kiryu’s iconic fighting pose – and back tattoo.

Speaking on his role during the announcement (H/T IGN), Takeuchi said, "You can’t play Kiryu Kazuma without getting into shape, so I knew I had to throw myself into it. This was a job not only for me but also for the costume and makeup teams. It took two and a half hours just to prepare for this shot."

In a press release, executive producer and Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio head Masayoshi Yokoyama said, "While the games let you experience their world through the subjective lens, this adaptation will be the ultimately objective way to enjoy the show. I have no doubt that fans of the series will be drawn to how it brings the games to life and adds new surprises. Newcomers, I'm sure, will find themselves invested simply in the gritty realism of the show."

<![CDATA[ Maleficent star to lead new Predator movie from Prey director ]]> Elle Fanning is set to lead Badlands, a new standalone movie in the Predator franchise.

Per Deadline, Fanning is set to star in the pic from Prey director Dan Trachtenberg. Screenwriter Patrick Aison will once again pen the script.

Trachtenberg's Prey is the fifth installment in the Predator franchise and serves as a prequel to the first four movies, providing an origin story for the trophy-hunting species. A departure from its male-dominated predecessors, the film sees an indigenous female protagonist (played by Amber Midthunder) go up against the alien hunters.

Badlands is set to serve as its own Predator film with the studio hoping to launch a new, separate series. A direct sequel to Prey, tentatively titled Prey 2, is reportedly still in development with Midthunder set to return. Though Prey was a Hulu exclusive, setting a streaming record for most-watched debut, it's possible that 20th Century will continue its string of theatrical releases and give Badlands a wide or limited run.

Deadline also reported that Fanning is a fan of the franchise and was on board after a meeting with Trachtenberg. A deal has not yet been closed, but "momentum is expected to pick up with the hope to shoot later this year."

Fanning received a Golden Globe nomination for her portrayal of Catherine The Great in the historical comedy The Great. The actor is currently filming the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown where she plays Sylvie Russo, Dylan's early, pre-frame love interest.

Badlands does not yet have a release date. Prey is streaming on Hulu. For more, check out our list of the most exciting upcoming movies in 2024 and beyond.

<![CDATA[ Thanos is joining Rian Johnson's Knives Out universe but he's leaving the Infinity Stones behind ]]> Josh Brolin has joined the ever-growing list of stars who have joined the cast of Rian Johnson's Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Brolin joins the cast alongside A-list actors Glenn Close, Kerry Washington, Jeremy Renner, Mila Kunis, Josh O’Connor, Cailee Spaeny, and Andrew Scott. Daniel Craig is back as Detective Benoit Blanc. No other character or plot details have been disclosed.

A third Knives Out movie was inevitable seeing as the sequel, Glass Onion, received a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay at the 95th Annual Academy Awards. The first saw Benoit Blanc investigate the murder of the patriarch of a wealthy dysfunctional family, with the second seeing the detective attend a murder mystery party thrown by an eccentric tech billionaire.

Brolin has played everyone from former United States President George W. Bush in W. to a young version of Tommy Lee's Agent K in Men in Black 3, and Cable (yes, that Cable) in Deadpool 2. Younger generations know him best as Thanos, the supervillain to end all supervillains in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and as War Master of the House Atreides Gurney Halleck in Dune and Dune: Part Two.

Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is set to hit theaters and Netflix in 2025. Production is set to begin this month in the United Kingdom. <![CDATA[ Haunting of Hill House creator Mike Flanagan says Netflix "refused at every turn" to release his movies and shows on DVD ]]> After announcing that Hush would finally be released on DVD, Mike Flanagan explained to attendees at the ATX Television Film Festival that Netflix fought him tooth and nail when it came to physical releases.

"In the years I worked at Netflix, I tried very hard to get them to release my work on blu-ray and DVD. They refused at every turn. It became clear very fast that their only priority was subs, and that they were actively hostile to the idea of physical media," Flanagan reportedly told the audience during The Monologue Case Study panel.

"This is a very dangerous point of view. While companies like Netflix pride themselves on being disruptors and have proven that they can affect great change in the industry, they sometimes fail to see the difference between disruption and damage," he continued. "So much that they can find themselves, intentionally or not, doing enormous harm to the very concept of film preservation."

Flanagan's projects for Netflix include the movies Hush, Before I Wake, Gerald's Game, and the TV shows The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Midnight Club. Flanagan has since moved on to Prime Video, where he is creating a TV series based on Stephen King's Dark Tower novels.

Hush was removed from Netflix in early 2023 and can no longer be streamed anywhere online. The filmmaker also said during the panel that Hush would get its own DVD and Blu-ray release in the near future.

It's worth noting that physical media is in more demand than ever, with movies like Skinamarink and The People's Joker getting a special, limited VHS release.

<![CDATA[ Doctor Who season 1, episode 6 review: "Loki's Kate Herron works her magic on Bridgerton-esque episode 'Rogue'" ]]> Dear reader… like many of you, I have been eagerly anticipating the sixth episode of the current season of Doctor Who, 'Rogue', thanks to the fact it's written by a certain Kate Herron (who co-penned the screenplay with her writing partner Briony Redman). Herron worked wonders with the God of Mischief on the first season of the hit Marvel show Loki, so surely she would bring something special to the Lord of Time too? As showrunner Russell T Davies himself has previously noted, Loki certainly had Doctor Who vibes, so the fit couldn't have been better – and as it turns out, he was right!

"Oh my Bridgerton!"

For her episode, Herron transports us back in time to Bath in 1813 where the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) are attending a glamorous ball at The Duchess of Pemberton's (Indira Varma) gorgeous mansion.

As Ruby herself notes early on, "this is so Bridgerton", with the episode showing its reverence for that beloved TV show throughout. From the swooningly romantic dialogue to the perfectly choreographed dancing, the handsome costume design to the luxurious sets, at times this is peak Bridgerton - so much so that Netflix will surely be left shaking in their boots. Hell, there's even an orchestral rendition of a modern pop hit (which needs to be added to Spotify asap thank you very much BBC).

However, whilst the Bridgerton-esque setting is perfectly pitched, crucially it's not just there for show as the Netflix series genuinely plays a key role in the plot of 'Rogue' too. Naturally, we can't reveal exactly what the connection between the two is in this spoiler-free review but it has surprising ties to the peculiar series of murders that are happening at the party. It's all very ridiculous and incredibly silly, but that doesn't mean it isn't brilliant fun too.

Meet Rogue

Investigating the crime spree alongside the Doctor and Ruby is mysterious bounty hunter Rogue, played by Mindhunter’s Jonathan Groff. There is a good reason why the episode is named after the character, as he is quite simply the star of the show, easily stealing the spotlight with every charming grin or quick-witted comment (of which there are plenty).

Standing alone on a balcony intensely watching the crowd beneath him, Groff's intriguing stranger immediately catches our eye - and the same is true for the Doctor whose attention is also drawn. Sparks fly the moment the pair meet thanks to the electric chemistry between Gatwa and Groff, so it's no wonder they instantly run off together to uncover what's really happening at this grand ball. To be honest, if Rogue told me to drop everything and come with him on an adventure upon our first meeting, I would too.

The dream duo immediately develop a lively dynamic, continually teasing each other with cheeky remarks - one particularly amusing sequence campily plays out to a Kylie Minogue banger. It’s not all joy and laughter though as there's a strong emotional beat here too, as the pair connect discussing the loved ones they have both lost on their galactic travels. We see a tenderness to Gatwa's Doctor we haven't witnessed before, as Groff's Rogue beautifully helps peel back the many layers. Our only hope now is that the two meet once again as being in their company is irresistible.

Sidelined stories

doctor who rogue

In fact, we miss the pair every time the episode shifts focus away from them, following Ruby as she pursues her own investigation into the scandalous romances playing out within the manor's walls. Whilst it is joyful seeing Ruby living out her Bridgerton dreams diving into these affairs of the heart, Gibson's companion feels oddly sidelined. Given that the previous two episodes, '73 Yards' and 'Boom', lacked much interaction between her and the Doctor, once again that sprightly dynamic between them is missed. And if you are hoping for further developments in the ongoing mystery of what exactly is going on with Ruby Sunday, you will be disappointed.

Finally Ruby and the Doctor are brought together at the end of 'Rogue' to face the episode's foe, but there lacks a real sense of threat given how overshadowed the villains have been throughout - they certainly aren’t making any 'best Doctor Who monsters' lists anytime soon. However, not every Doctor Who enemy needs to be a terrifying beast, sometimes the sillier the better - it’s just a shame this episode's adversary is absurd but ultimately unmemorable.

The same can't be said for Rogue himself, who you will be wanting more of as soon as the credits have started rolling. Writers Herron and Redman cleverly placed Groff's newbie at the heart of the episode, knowing that the love for him would be felt instantaneously. As the official synopsis teases, he changes the Doctor's life forever - and given how he's destined to become a fan-favorite, that will be true for viewers too.

'Rogue' will be released on June 7 at 7:00pm ET on Disney Plus and at midnight June 8 on BBC iPlayer, before airing later that day live on BBC One. Stay up to date with our Doctor Who release schedule.

<![CDATA[ Beyond the Spider-Verse producer assures fans that there’s no generative AI in the upcoming film, wants to "create new visual styles that have never been seen in a studio CG film" ]]> Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse producer Christopher Miller says fans need not worry about the use of AI in the upcoming sequel.

"Dear @SonyAnimation," one fan wrote, tagging Miller and his producing patner Phil Lord in the post. "Keep generative AI away from Spider-Man: Beyond The Spider-Verse. AI robs people of their jobs & produces nothing but slop. We don’t want that anywhere near this film or any film for that matter. Please keep it away from the filmmaking process. Thank you."

Generative AI has been a concern as of late, as more and more continues to pop up online and in film, TV, and video games. Indie horror flick Late Night with the Devil came under fire earlier this year for using AI for three images that appear within the film. Miller, who produced Across the Spider-Verse and Into the Spider-Verse for Sony Animation, says they have no interest in using AI for their upcoming projects.

Miller swiftly responded, writing: "There is no generative AI in Beyond the Spider-Verse and there never will be. One of the main goals of the films is to create new visual styles that have never been seen in a studio CG film, not steal the generic plagiarized average of other artists’ work."

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse does not yet have a release date, though it was previously set to hit theaters on March 29, 2024. Singer d4vd recently teased a potential 2025 release date for the film, but their involvement in the film has yet to be confirmed.

<![CDATA[ Lost is coming to Netflix very soon – and fans think it's time we re-evaluated that finale ]]> Hit '00s sci-fi series Lost is coming to Netflix next month, and fans think it's the perfect time for the show's controversial finale to the recognition it deserves.

The show follows the survivors of a plane crash who find themselves stranded on a mysterious island in the Pacific Ocean. Contending with the island's other inhabitants – both human and supernatural – Jack (Matthew Fox), Kate (Evangeline Lilly), Sawyer (Josh Holloway), and co. slowly realize that rescue or escape may not be on the cards.

Co-created by JJ Abrams, Damon Lindelof, and Jeffrey Lieber, the show premiered in 2004 and ran for six seasons. With each season, the series got increasingly bolder, introducing more sci-fi and supernatural elements, and this wasn't popular with everybody. The finale episode, in particular, ruffled feathers with its final twist. However, Lost fans are convinced that a re-evaluation of the series' more controversial elements is finally coming.

"The reevaluation is coming. Those of us who held firm that this show rules will be vindicated," tweeted one fan. "The Lost renaissance and the reevaluation of the ending is upon us," echoed another.

"My firm stance remains that Lost is good and the finale is great and haters will be welcomed with open arms on the right side of history after they reevaluate," wrote someone else

Others lamented that the show marked an, ahem, lost era of TV. "22 episodes, 6 seasons. Elevated broadcast drama structure," another Twitter user wrote. "This was peak TV. Studios need to go back to making long running, well paced shows with a good number of episodes per season. Yes, we’ll watch LOST on Netflix but can we please also greenlight shows like this in 2024?!"

All six seasons of Lost will start streaming on Netflix on July 1. In the meantime, check out our picks of the other best Netflix shows to add to your watch list.

<![CDATA[ Squid Game’s Lee Jung-jae on joining The Acolyte, making history as a Jedi, and why he thinks Russian Doll’s Leslye Headland has a "fresh take" on Star Wars ]]> All eyes have been on Lee Jung-jae since his leading role as Seong Gi-hun, AKA Player 456, in Netflix’s mega-hit Squid Game.

It was a performance that also put him on the radar of The Acolyte creator Leslye Headland and led to him joining a cast of Jedi in a galaxy far, far away – as a character that is an historic first for the franchise.

"Director and showrunner Leslye Headland had watched me in Squid Game and wanted to meet with me. We had an initial Zoom meeting that led to a camera test," Lee tells GamesRadar+ (via an interpreter) about the initial conversations that led to him being cast as the sage Jedi Master Sol in The Acolyte.

"I had actually watched Leslye’s previous work, Russian Doll and really enjoyed it. I thought it was really surprising that she reached out to me because I didn't think that there was too much in common between Russian Doll and Star Wars," Lee says of Headland’s previous work, the time loop Netflix drama starring Natasha Lyonne.

"However I thought, because of this, she would have such a fresh take on directing a Star Wars show and I know that she is a Star Wars super fan. So she knows so much about the universe and the history of Star Wars, down to the small details. I was really looking forward to working with her on this."

Sol isn’t just a beacon of patience and understanding in The Acolyte as the Jedi faces its first crisis of confidence in decades in a story set a century before The Phantom Menace. Lee is also the first Asian actor to play a Jedi in live-action, something the actor is "extremely honored" by.

"I believe I'm the first Asian actor to play a Jedi Master. So I think that is something that's a little bit different," Lee says on how his Jedi stands out from the pack in not only his own show, but in the wider Star Wars universe.

"When you look at Star Wars films and shows in the past, you see that whether it's the costume or some of the martial arts [and] choreography, there is some kind of Asian influence. So I thought that maybe, because The Acolyte happens in a timeline that is previous to any show or film that's out currently, there was a choice to select an Asian actor for the role of Master Sol."

Next up for Lee is a return to the Front Man’s devilish selection of childhood games as Player 456 in Squid Game season 2, which is set to release on Netflix this year.

On what he’s learned from The Acolyte moving forward in his career – including on Squid Game – Lee explained it was the action side of his first English-language role that will prove most beneficial.

"I was working with Hollywood's best action team in order to train for the Acolyte," Lee says.

"They gave me a very regimented schedule to training, step-by-step, starting from the basics. Because I went through such rigorous and systematic training, I do think that will be very helpful in my future projects."

The Acolyte is streaming exclusively on Disney Plus from June 4 in the US and June 5 in the UK.

<![CDATA[ First Venom 3 trailer sees Tom Hardy and the symbiote up against their biggest threat yet – and a call back to Spider-Man: No Way Home ]]> The first trailer for Venom: The Last Dance is here, and it's seriously wild.

The clip follows Tom Hardy's Eddie Brock and his symbiote bestie, as the duo seem to be working like a well-oiled machine to defeat baddies. Well, almost. There are still some bumps when it comes to their catchphrase.

Problems arise when it turns out there's a major threat incoming from outer space. It looks like the biggest danger Eddie and the symbiote have ever had to face, and, by the looks of things, they might not make it out alive. That might be why it's called The Last Dance...

Venom 3 has been confirmed to be the last movie in the franchise. Kelly Marcel directs, with Juno Temple and Chiwetel Ejiofor joining Hardy in the cast. Judging by the trailer, they look to be trying to capture Eddie and Venom.

The threequel follows on from Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage, but Hardy and the symbiote also made an appearance in one of the Spider-Man: No Way Home post-credits scene. That moment is referenced in the new trailer, though the No Way Home moment was set in the MCU, and this movie isn't. Confused yet?

"It's been a wild, wonderful ride," Temple said of filming the threequel earlier this year. "It's so new to me. It's a big set! This is crazy. It's been so much fun and I got to work with such cool people. I've been so lucky in my career to just have the most incredible casts. I can't wait for it to get out into the world. I think it's going to be a good one."

Venom 3 is released this October 25. In the meantime, keep up to date with all of the year's biggest movie release dates through the link.

<![CDATA[ Suits star says the hugely popular sit-com could get a movie spin-off: "It is possible" ]]> There could be a Suits movie someday, according to star Patrick J. Adams.

The sit-com has been enjoying a resurgence in popularity since its release on Netflix, which saw it break a major streaming record

"It's definitely something [creator Aaron Korsh] is interested in doing, trying to get the band back together," Adams said of a Suits movie during ATX's retrospective on the show (H/T Deadline). "It's gonna depend on a million things if that can happen, but is it possible."

Dulé Hill (who portrayed attorney Alex Williams) is also up for a Suits movie. "I'll say as a fan of USA shows becoming films, I would definitely like to be doing another one," he said – the actor also starred in three movie spin-offs of his USA Network show Psych.

While that's not confirmation of a movie happening, then, the good news is there is a Suits spin-off already in the works.

Arrow actor Stephen Amell will star in Suits: LA as Ted Black, with The Walking Dead actor Josh McDermitt starring opposite him as Stuart Lane. The logline reads: "[Ted's] firm is at a crisis point, and in order to survive he must embrace a role he held in contempt his entire career. Ted is surrounded by a stellar group of characters who test their loyalties to both Ted and each other while they can't help but mix their personal and professional lives. All of this is going on while events from years ago slowly unravel that led Ted to leave behind everything and everyone he loved."
